My heart breaks….

As a Christian we must remember that we live in a fallen world where there is harm to not only people but the earth – and we are called to be stewards and workers and restorers of both. We are called to love, honor, and serve … and to do so with putting ourselves out at that expense. We need to remember and understand that sacrifice means it must cost ME something…. especially so that others can be lifted up.

We are called to be “salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13) as well as remembering and recognizing that not only are we bearers of the “image of God” (Gen 1:27) but AS THOSE IMAGE BEARERS OF CHRIST we must live it out each and every day. And in Genesis God isn’t saying that we “look” like him – but that we ACT like him.

We need to act like Him.

Paul writes in Philippians 2:1-4 that we are to do “nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Paul then writes in Colossians 3:12-17 that we are to “clothe ourselves  with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bearing with each other and forgiving whatever grievances we may have against one another. Forgiving as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them together in perfect unity.” We need to look down and see what we are “wearing”… and change the clothes if need be.

“Lord…when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?”

“I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.” (Matt 25:44-45)

In the end none of us are coming out on top. And really, IMHO, that shouldn’t be our goal anyway. The beauty of love and sacrifice is that it knows no borders, is halted by no walls, is given freely to all people, and expects nothing in return. I think we need to remember what “grace” looks like and feels like and start living it, giving it, and receiving it.

Take my thoughts for what they are worth. God bless.

    1. I agree on the difficulty of it…and I wonder if that’s the point? It’s easy to center life and actions around me. It’s easy putting me above others, especially when it makes me comfortable. But ultimately it’s serving others where we find the greatest joy…right?

There’s probably a sermon in that thinking ….

    2. I wonder if that’s the point? That it’s not supposed to be easy.

I’m really good at centering things around me and my comfort but it is a lot more work to push ME aside and let YOU be built up. But in the end, what I find, is that I take more joy in serving others and their needs more than my own (there’s probably a sermon in there)
